Japanese women are developing new sicknesses after their husbands retire and start hanging around the house full time. The phenomenon RHS mostly afflicts women over 55 who have spent their lives in the traditional role of stay-at-home wives.
Comments especially welcome from middle aged women and those with retired husbands.
One response to “Familiarity Breeds Contempt and Illness”
Well – this is a scary subject which has been on my mind more and more lately and we are getting close to retirement. I decided that I’m not going to worry too much about it yet as I have always had the philosophy of not getting too stressed out until I really need to be stressed. I think it is very important for retired couples to maintain some kind of independence. I don’t like to see couples who become joined at the hip once they retire. ALso – I notice that often the woman gives up driving, essentially because the “husband is the one who drives when they are together” and the next thing you know the woman develops a great fear of driving. Each couple will have their own unique battles to overcome and so they should figure out how to maintain their individuality and not become dominant over the other.
