Now a news report suggesting that Osama bin Bogeyman may have expired peacefully in his bed from a virulent bout of typhoid.
Curiosity had me googling to check out the original French article which detailed the leak of classified French document which claimed that Saudi authorities ‘would have ‘ acquired information regarding Bin Laden’s demise ( See Google translation of above article.) To get all pedantic about the article, it struck me as strange that the original article used the words ‘auraient acquis‘ , translated as ‘would have acquired‘ as opposed to ‘ont acquis‘ which would translate to ‘have acquired‘. In other words, the Saudis might have acquired information regarding OBL’s death.
Does this mean the whole report is just a canard, or is it an early leak of Rove’s promised October surprise? If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it must, well…. be a canard!
Update:
The plot thickens. Could it be that this report might have squashed the possibility of parading a gold framed and perfectly matted blow up of OBL’s face ( like what was done for Zarqawi’s capture- just my inner conspiracy theorist piping up, irrepressible.) "OBL wasn’t killed in a precision bomb strike by the US military, he just gave up the ghost due to natural causes." But wait, the death hasn’t been confirmed yet, so I shouldn’t quack about this.

If Bin Laden died from illness, Bush will claim that an overwhelming fear of America weakened his immune system. “See? Psychological torture is an important tool in the war on terror!” It’ll be fun to see how Bush mangles the logic in order to take credit.

I’m sure the RW-ers are already preparing their spin lines, if it gets confirmed that OBL is dead. Probably along the lines of how GWB the Omnipotent caused OBL to run and hide away from modern hospitals ( never mind that the guy managed to survive 5 years after 9/11 despite requiring regular dialysis).

First I thought it was the wily Musharraf (Simon & Schuster’s next block bluster fiction writer) spreading the usual misinformation. Then I heard the Saudis are involved and the news is filtered through the French media! Now I don’t know what to think.
But you are right. Rove will surely find an appropriate spin in case the news is confirmed. How about precision guided remote germ warfare? But wait! That is banned. However, when did anything so wimpy as an international treaty stop Bush Inc. from their lethal tactics?

Hmmm, maybe they’ll claim that the killer spinach got him. Sorry, wrong bacteria.
The thing to do now is to focus carefully on the other news, to see what news of importance ( election problems etc. with evoting, anybody?) might be pushed to the background while everyone is plucking petals of this “Is he dead or isn’t he…” daisy.

Oh, good point, Sujatha. I’ve been thinking about how the Bush Admin and their media lackeys might spin OBL’s typhoid-inspired death to their advantage, but the news that this effectively hides will probably wind up being the much more important thing to watch for.
