180pxmammatus_clouds I love watching clouds. I don’t know much about them but I like to look at them. The eagerly awaited Indian monsoon clouds, the foreboding dark clouds during a thunderstorm, the golden clouds at sunset, the menacing funnel clouds signaling tornadoes and the plain white fluffy clouds drifting in a cerulean sky – they are all beautiful. Today I stumbled upon some spectacular photos of a particular type of cloud formation. I may have seen some variation of it, having lived in the midwest for more than fifteen years where the phenomenon seems to occur most frequently. But I don’t remember ever seeing anything quite like the clouds depicted in the photos. Their metereological name is Mammatus Clouds. As the name suggests, hanging heavily from the sky they resemble female breasts. See the amazing and luminous Mammatus Clouds in the skies over Hastings, Nebraska  here and read about the mechanism of their formation here and here.

I think they look more akin to cow udders than human mammaries, but they are beauties, indeed!
