We’ve certainly been critical enough of John McCain here at A.B. — and rightly so, given his indefensible support of the war, torture, etc. But to be fair to the senator, he’s at least on the right side of something for once: prescription medications. McCain is supporting the reimportation of drugs from Canada in order to cut costs to American consumers, and will support reimportation from Mexico and anywhere else once the proper safeguards are in place.
Granted, this doesn’t seem to go quite far enough — why limit drug importation from Canada to reimportation only? But for once the conservative Republican is actually living up to his "maverick" label. Good job, Senator!
In other political news, the Clinton and Obama campaigns are fighting over exactly how much of a hack alleged journalist Bob Novak really is. Meanwhile, John Edwards continues to look like the best of the Democrats.

Are you crazy?!? John Mcain is against torture. He has always spoken out against it considering the torture that he went through.

Tim: George Bush has always spoken out in favor of compassion and generally non-evil things, too, but then his actions turn out to be the opposite of that. It’s called lying. Or cognitive dissonance, if you want to be generous to Senator McCain.
The so-called “McCain Amendment,” which was originally conceived and portrayed as an anti-torture law (in light of the fact that the U.S. was going around torturing people) — you know, the one that the Bush Administration fought so hard against and threatened to veto? McCain caved in on the final draft, creating an extremely narrow statutory definition of “cruel treatment,” precluding any court from interpreting any part of the Geneva Conventions and leaving sole interpretive authority to the President, stripping habeas corpus rights, and allowing evidence produced by coercion (including torture) to be used against the Guantanamo detainees. Which would be bad enough, but given McCain’s experiences and stature, you’d expect, if anything, more from him. The Bush Administration got pretty much everything it wanted, which should tell you something.
