What’s with some men of God?  Rather than soothe the nerves of their flocks, they fancy themselves as rabble rousers, political heavy hitters, all knowing prognosticators and revisionist history scholars.

First Barack Obama gently distanced himself from his long time pastor Reverend Jeremiah Wright when video clips of Wright’s fiery sermons surfaced. A few weeks later when the spurned but tenacious pastor decided to twist the knife further into Obama’s public wound by going ballistic at the National Press Club, the erstwhile acolyte and current presidential candidate had to "reject" him.

Now another presidential candidate has been forced to renounce a pastor whose blessings he had sought out in order to endear himself to the conservative evangelicals. Initially John McCain adamantly ignored calls to renounce the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee, the apocalyptic preacher from San Antonio, TX who has said some nasty things about the Catholic Church, homosexuals, Islam and Harry Potter. Hagee’s fondest dream is to bring about a bloody war in the middle east to pave the way for the Second Coming of Christ. To that end, he supports Israel with money and political clout and opposes all Islamic countries. Now a video has been located in which Hagee describes the WWII Jewish Holocaust as God’s will – a predestined and necessary measure, which by making possible the establishment the state of Israel, set the stage for the End Times prophecy to be realized. (For the likes of Hagee, every significant world event is a cog in the wheel of the Apocalyptic juggernaut)  The sermon was offensive and nutty enough that McCain has at last "repudiated" the endorsement he had earlier sought from Hagee.

Who is Hillary’s spiritual guru?  What has he said?  Is there a video out there?  What fun lies in wait for us if Mormon Mitt Romney becomes McCain’s running mate?  Whom will Obama pick?  Which church / synagogue / temple / mosque does he / she attend?  When will we know?  I can’t wait to find out!

  1. Good questions all — but I’m daring to hope that nothing more ever need be known by any of us about Hillary’s prayer group-leaders. May they all re-absorb her…

Wait till McCain picks Jindal– will the ‘secret Hindu’ brigade start on him, since Obama has been tarred with the ‘secret Muslim’ meme. Or will the Democrats take his conversion to Catholicism for granted? I’ve a lingering suspicion that this was one of those politically expedient switches in religion, but I might be wrong.

Glad to see McCain broke with Hagee, as late as it was — even though having Hagee around would probably help Obama. Hagee’s comments on Hitler, on the Church, on gays, and Islam were repellant. Let’s hope that hardcore culture war is dying out as an effective right-wing campaign strategy.

  4. If McCain picks Bobby Jindal — and I don’t think he will, whatever the speculation; the base just wouldn’t like it — I don’t foresee caring if it’s a politically expedient switch in religion. Politicians taking actions to get votes are nothing new; and as for one religion vs. the other, well, all faiths are the same to me.
