World famous heart surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey died on Friday night in Houston. I had a short post on DeBakey a few months ago when he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.  More details of his life and work here in the Houston Chronicle.

in the early 60’s my mom was given 3 months to live. friends of mine who knew of this great heart surgeon told me to give him a call. i lived in new york at the time. i called and made an appointment with dr. debakey and the following sunday, we were off to houston. when dr. debakey walked into my moms room she always told me that it was like seeing God. this wonderful man gave my mom another 30 years of life. when she died of lymphoma years later i wrote him and told him of her death. he sent me a beautiful letter which i have until today. i will never forget this great man. i remember calling him another time and minutes later, after he came out of surgery he called me back. wish we had the dedication today like he showed. god bless him. sincerely, jean profita
