The electricity in our house is back after thirteen interminable days of power outage. On Thursday at 9:45pm while I was in my neighbor’s kitchen boiling water to fill the thermos, a utility truck came by and at 10:15pm, the house was humming with familiar sounds of whirring appliances. The funny thing is that I was told every day by Center Point Energy that the transformer that was the culprit for our prolonged misery could not be repaired until a bucket truck became available. The truck that finally came to our rescue was not of the bucket variety. The technician climbed the pole with the help of clamps – like a coconut tree climber.
Although the financial hurricane on Wall Street side-swiped the natural disaster story on the Texas coast off the front pages of the news, Houstonians will remember Ike for a long time to come and Galvestonians, for even longer.

How surprising! I wonder why the bucket truck wasn’t up to the challenge and the utilities worker had to shimmy up the pole instead. Are you sure this isn’t a temporary fix?
Anyway, it’s good that your power is finally back after the long outage without your having to move to the hotel. How is the availability of gas and foodstuff- is it more or less normal?

I don’t know why the bucket truck didn’t turn up. Its function was to “raise” the technician up to the transformer. The technician climbed the pole instead and did the necessary repairs and replaced the burnt out fuse. The fix is final. At least, that is what we have been told.

Well, congratulations on the electricity. I too am feeling human again after the debate last night. I thought Obama did extremely well. McCain seemed tense, petulant. It was a relief to see the contrast play out so well.
On the other hand: Bush, during his debates with Kerry, seemed petulant and borderline incoherent, and that did not prevent his winning. After that experience, I’m a little unclear on what impact debates have on the race…but still. It was a good night.
Anyway. I hope you are turning lamps off and on, luxuriating in the electric happiness.

Indeed I am luxuriating in “electric happiness.” For the first time, rather than feel annoyed, I experienced an uncommon joy in resetting all those blinking LED displays on clocks and appliances around my house.
