Debate
I think  this article by Mary Lyon mirrors my impressions quite well on the presidential debate last night, and saves me the trouble of having to write in detail about it.

  1. I made sure I got up at 6am yesterday so I could catch the debate live on CNN in New Delhi. The town hall format, supposedly favorable to McCain, fell rather flat for him don’t you think? In an otherwise lack luster forum, “That One” came across as the calm and collected adult.
Also, the high chairs on which Obama lounged gracefully and McCain could barely park his backside, didn’t contribute to the latter’s comfort level. I am surprised that the McCain campaign didn’t have the foresight to gauge the aesthetic effect of the unfavorable seating arrangement. And when a candidate has to send out his female surrogates (wife and VP pick) to throw mud at his opponent, one knows that the campaign is pressing panic buttons.

McCain tended to ramble on with unrelated stuff in his answers, mainly focused on mentioning all his usual attack lines, while Obama was repeating his talking points for the zillionth time. We’ve heard these all so often that we could deliver their lines for them.
So,the substance of the debate was not hugely different or interesting, so I pondered over the body language, with generous assistance from youtube clips, of course. Obama was at ease, McCain was surprisingly stiff and uncomfortable, and seemed to induce a subtle backward shift in his ‘friends’ every time he tried to toddle up to them.
It may not alter the race hugely, but might just improve the comfort level of undecideds who still ‘haven’t made up their minds’ about McCain or Obama.
