The longest total solar eclipse of this century started in India on Wednesday morning and is sweeping eastward. The New York Times has a report by a blogger who is chasing the eclipse.
My previous post on total solar eclipse is here. As per Anna's suggestion (see comments), I have since then read Annie Dillard's essay, "Total Eclipse."
I saw a total eclipse of the sun in 1970 and remember vividly the events leading to it and after, which far surpassed the eclipse itself in my consciousness. Total eclipses draw such crowds that the misadventures of getting there and being there surely are more interesting than the viewing itself. Do other readers who have seen a total eclipse have similar experiences? After all, having seen one, what can you possibly say about it that will interest anyone who hasn’t?
