From the Indychannel:

Patrick Roth uses a fully electric car to take his daughter to school and run errands, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported. The
car may look like any ordinary Ford Escort, but a closer look reveals
that it's anything but. Roth didn't buy the car that way. He built it
himself

Here's a step by step link to how he did it, all at the cost of about $13,000, including the car.

Now again, why did GM kill the electric car?

  1. I saw that movie! I remember having a very hard time deciding who could plausibly be ‘blamed’ for killing the car, if that’s what it was. Except for an oil company, no-one has an obvious motive, and you’d think power utility companies would quite like the idea of a plug-in car, forming an effective counterweight. What conclusions did you form?

  2. I haven’t really seen the movie yet, it’s still languishing on the far end of my Netflix queue, so I haven’t got any conclusions yet, unless you count reading the Wikipedia link to be enough of a Cliff’s notes version of the movie ;)
I quite like the idea of purchasing a car and modifying it into an electric vehicle, but am hoping that the industry finally comes up with something affordable and effective, given the current push for greener technologies. My current 12-year car isn’t exactly the most fuel-efficient thing around, even though it is reliable.

So some guy can build an electric car in his garage for thirteen grand but our esteemed American car makers cannot do the same. Sheesh. No wonder this nation is sliding down hill.

  4. Now that government controls things it will be interesting to see the direction Detroit goes. Anything can happen at this point.
